An important strain of the vaginal microbiome: L. crispatus produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, helping lower vaginal pH and create an environment where harmful microbes struggle to grow. Studys suggest that dominance of L. crispatus is associated with better vaginal health and fewer infections.

A randomized study using oral and vaginal administration of L. crispatus found a significant improvement in Nugent score, discharge, odour and itching in women with BV.
